It’s a bit unfair to the YP’s trying to recreate themselves online because the real digital Yellow Pages is Google and there’s no way they can compete with that at this point.
Groupon’s success highlights Yelp’s fundamental problem. Their merchants don’t want to buy placement or clicks. The only marketing they will happily pay for is new customers. Yelp’s recently announced partnership with Open Table is perhaps a sign that they understand this.
